Mitochondria are the power plants of the body, generating 90% of our energy. When they fail to produce enough energy, the body is unable to function properly. This causes an energy crisis, which can result in disease. All tissues require energy, and thus mitochondrial disease can affect nearly the whole body. However, since nerve and muscle have the highest energy needs, these tissues are usually the most affected. When energy production is very low, this results in “classical” mitochondrial disease. These diseases are often severe, associated with mental retardation, progressive and/or fatal.

• Dysautonomia

The MDFDA exists predominantly to help children and their families who suffer from these and other functional or dysautonomic conditions as a result of cellular energy depletion (mitochondrial dysfunction). While the functional disorders are often very common conditions and there are many physicians who treat them, very few physicians specialize in treating the underlying mitochondrial disease. Please help us to fund research, advocate for resources, educate families and physicians, and find a cure!
